Creating Your First Project

This guide walks you through creating and configuring your first survey project in Project Deku.

Prerequisites

Account Requirements

  • Active Project Deku account with project creation permissions
  • Access to either ODK Central or KoBoToolbox platform
  • Basic understanding of survey data collection workflows

Step-by-Step Project Creation

1. Access Project Creation

From the main dashboard: 1. Click the "Create New Project" button 2. Or navigate to Projects > "+ New Project" 3. Complete the project creation form

2. Basic Project Configuration

Project Information

  • Project Name: Use clear, descriptive names (e.g., "Rural Health Survey 2024")
  • Description: Include research objectives, target population, geographic scope
  • Project Slug: URL-friendly identifier (auto-generated)
  • Status: Set to "Active" for immediate use

Timeline Configuration

  • Survey Start Date: Data collection start date
  • Survey End Date: Expected completion date
  • Project Duration: Overall project timeline

3. Data Source Integration

ODK Central Configuration

Option A: Global Settings - Select "Use Global ODK Central Settings" for pre-configured credentials

Option B: Custom Setup - ODK Central URL: Server URL (e.g., https://central.example.org) - ODK Project ID: Numeric project ID from ODK Central - Email/Password: ODK Central account credentials

KoBoToolbox Configuration

Option A: Global Settings - Select "Use Global KoBoToolbox Settings"

Option B: Custom Setup - KoBo Server URL: Choose appropriate server (KoBoToolbox, Humanitarian, or custom) - Username/API Token: KoBoToolbox credentials - Project Tag: Optional tag to filter relevant assets

4. Team Management

Adding Team Members

  1. Click "Add Team Member"
  2. Enter email addresses (bulk invite supported)
  3. Assign roles:

  5. Administrator: User management and configuration
